Norwegian Cruise Line Survey Explores Longer Crew Contracts
A new survey conducted onboard several Norwegian Cruise Line vessels is prompting discussion about whether the company may be considering longer contracts for crew and officers across its fleet in the future.
Norwegian Cruise Line recently introduced an anonymous “Service Period (Contract) Extension Survey” for crew members working onboard Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Dawn, and Norwegian Joy.
According to the survey, the company is “exploring future options related to contract length” and is seeking crew feedback before making any decisions.
Crew members were invited to voluntarily complete the survey by May 14, sharing their opinions on current contract lengths and the possibility of extending contracts by up to eight weeks.
In the survey introduction, NCL stated:
“Norwegian Cruise Lines has received feedback that some crew members are interested to stay longer on board and have the opportunity for greater earnings – we hear you! We are exploring the opportunity to offer a contract extension of up to 8 weeks, providing the chance to choose what works best for you and your family.”
The cruise line also explained that any future extensions would maintain the same pay structure and career development opportunities already included in existing contracts.
Several questions focused on crew attitudes toward longer service periods. Participants were asked whether their current contracts had previously been shortened or extended, whether those changes were requested by the crew member or the company, and whether they would consider extending either their current or future contracts by up to eight weeks.
The survey also asked crew members to explain any reasons they might not want to remain onboard longer, while requesting details about the next ship they are scheduled to join.
At present, Norwegian Cruise Line has not officially announced any fleetwide changes to crew contract lengths. However, the survey indicates the company is actively assessing crew opinion on the possibility of longer assignments onboard.
The topic has already sparked debate among crew members. Some expressed concern that extended contracts could result in employees spending close to eight months onboard before returning home for vacation. Others noted that crew members have traditionally been able to request individual extensions through the crew purser’s office.
Contract duration continues to be a sensitive issue for many cruise ship employees. While some crew members may welcome longer contracts due to increased earning potential and fewer travel interruptions, others are concerned about fatigue, stress, burnout, mental health, and extended periods away from family.
