China’s Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) has tightened its monitoring of vessels, according to a recent update from class society DNV.

Chinese authorities are now closely tracking any vessel that has been detained twice within the past 12 months, regardless of the detention location, as well as any vessel penalized twice in the same period for serious violations.

These violations include inadequate manning, deliberately turning off the AIS system, intentionally discharging pollutants illegally, and overloading.

Vessels under this special scrutiny are likely to undergo port state control inspections at every port call in China. Additionally, all inspections conducted on these vessels are expected to be performed "in a detailed manner."
