Shanghai, the world's largest container port, has inaugurated a new container terminal area north of the city center on the south bank of the Yangtze River. This addition complements the existing container terminals in Waigaoqiao and Yangshan.

The first phase of Shanghai Luojing Port, which opened this week, boosts the city's annual capacity by an additional 2.6 million TEUs. The new area redeveloped a former bulk terminal previously used by local steel mills.

Phase one of the automated terminal includes five berths, with subsequent phases set to increase Luojing's total capacity to 6 million TEUs.

Shanghai has established an impressive 10 million TEU lead over its nearest competitor in the top 30 container ports worldwide, as ranked by Alphaliner.

For the past 14 years, Shanghai has maintained its position as the world's largest container port, consistently surpassing Singapore, which holds second place. The city is now on the verge of becoming the first in the world to handle 50 million TEUs in a single calendar year.
