Listing Cargo Ship Makes Distress Call to Suez Canal Authority
On April 23, the Suez Canal Authority was alerted to an emergency involving an inland cargo ship, Labatros, at the northern end of the Suez Canal. The ship experienced a loss of stability just before it was set to join the northbound convoy through the canal.
Responding swiftly to the potential risk of capsizing, the Suez Canal Authority deployed two tugboats and an additional support vessel to stabilize the situation and ensure the safety of the 12 crew members on board the tilting ship.
The Labatros, currently moored at Port Said, awaits a technical evaluation to investigate the cause of its instability. Meanwhile, port authorities are vigilantly monitoring for any environmental threats that might arise from the situation.
The Labatros, a 3000-ton deadweight vessel, is registered in Tanzania, owned by a Lebanese company, and managed by Egypt’s Assiut Agency.
