Job Description
Passage Planning
: Physically draws the "road map" for the voyage from port to port, calculating distances, checking weather patterns, and identifying hazards under the Captain's guidance.
Chart & Publication Management
: Responsible for the upkeep of both paper and electronic (
ECDIS
) charts. They must update these weekly based on "Notices to Mariners" to ensure safe navigation.
Bridge Watchkeeping
: Typically stands the
12-4 watch
(noon to 4 PM and midnight to 4 AM). They monitor radar, maintain lookouts, and ensure the vessel follows international collision regulations (
COLREGs
).
Medical Officer Duties
: Often serves as the designated medical officer on board, maintaining the ship's hospital, medical locker, and providing first aid to injured crew.
GMDSS & Communications
: Oversees the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) equipment, performing regular tests and preparing monthly radio traffic reports.
Cargo & Port Operations
: Assists the Chief Officer during loading/unloading by monitoring ballast water intake and managing mooring lines at the rear (
aft
) of the ship during arrival and departure
Skills and Qualifications:
AT LEAST 18 MONTHS OF EXPERIENCE AS 2ND OFFICER
WITH OR WITHOUT VALID US VISA
