Job Information Job Description Primary Responsibilities Safety Officer Duties : The Third Officer is typically the designated officer for the inspection and maintenance of all Life-Saving Appliances (LSA) and Fire-Fighting Equipment (FFE) . This includes: Ensuring lifeboats, liferafts, and lifejackets are in constant readiness. Testing fire extinguishers, hydrants, hoses, and breathing apparatus (SCBA/EEBD). Maintaining records of equipment expiry dates and service requirements in the ship's Planned Maintenance System (PMS). Emergency Drills : Preparing the ship's drill matrix and coordinating regular safety drills (e.g., fire, abandon ship, man overboard) as required by SOLAS regulations. Navigational Watchkeeping : Standing an independent bridge watch, traditionally the 0800–1200 and 2000–2400 watch . They are responsible for safe navigation, traffic avoidance using Radar/ARPA, and monitoring weather conditions.
