Indian Government Reaches Wage Agreement with Dockworkers
The Indian government has successfully finalized a wage agreement with dockworkers, bringing an end to nearly three years of negotiations. The resolution came just in time, as port workers had threatened to launch an indefinite strike starting yesterday if a pay deal had not been reached. The previous wage agreement had lapsed in December 2021.
Approximately 20,000 permanent dockworkers are employed across India’s 12 major ports.
Meanwhile, the global shipping industry is preparing for a potential new wave of strikes at key ports, with the possibility of a shutdown on the US East and Gulf coasts looming on October 1. Additionally, a Canadian rail strike occurred last week, and unionized dockworkers in Germany recently turned down a collective agreement proposed by port operators.
