Cargo Ship Havelland Experiences Engine Failure in Kiel Canal
The cargo ship Havelland encountered engine trouble during its westbound journey through the Kiel Canal in Germany on January 20. No injuries or environmental pollution have been reported in connection with the incident.
The engine failure occurred at approximately 11:53 AM local time as the vessel was en route from Sundsvall, Sweden, to Hull Port, United Kingdom. Following the failure, the ship veered into the canal’s southern embankment.
Fortunately, the crew was able to restart one of the engines, generating enough power to free the vessel. The tugboat Parat was dispatched to assist and safely escorted the Havelland to Rendsburg.
The Havelland is a general cargo vessel measuring 110.9 meters in length and 16.5 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 4,966. Built in 2012, the ship is registered under the Portuguese flag.
